The project involved a new hospital wing and addition, including expanded parking, a bus stop, an ambulance lane, and associated public ingress and egress. Landscape architecture services began after the project budget had been established and approved, with design concepts already in the final stages of building permitting. As the Project Landscape Architect, services included completing the work from Design Development (DD) through Construction Documents (CD).
At the time of involvement, the approved site layout consisted of approximately 95 percent hardscape, with parking and pedestrian circulation organized through extensive terracing and retaining walls. These walls—generally a minimum of three feet in height—were used to accommodate an approximately fifteen-foot elevation change between the building entrance and the street. Softscape opportunities were limited, and the parking areas functioned as stepped, walled zones rather than integrated outdoor spaces.
